• Professional Development Hours (PDH)

ISA Section and Divisions may want to consider offering Professional Development Hours (PDHs) to attendees of educational sessions they sponsor. The PDH is a unit of measure that recognizes continuing education. Many State Engineering Boards either now require or are considering requiring Professional Engineers (PE) to obtain a specified number of PDHs as part of their PE renewal. Requirements and qualifications for PDH credit vary among State Engineering Boards. However, most Boards will recognize activities that are technical in nature and relevant to improvement of the engineer's job skills.

As a provider of PDHs, the following guidelines are recommended:

    • At least 50 minutes of active presentation/participation is required for 1 PDH credit
    • Technical presentations/educational sessions at Section meetings may qualify for PDH credit
    • Attendees should be provided documentation of their attendance

A template certificate of completion is available for Sections/Divisions use. Simply fill in the title of the educational event, the date, and the number of PDHs earned. Provide attendees who complete the session with a copy of the certificate for their records.

Some typical events that earn PDHs are listed below. Please note that this list can vary from state to state and the State Boards have final approval authority on determination of credits. Members should check with their state boards to confirm what is applicable for renewal credit.

    • successful completion of continuing education courses
    • successful completion of correspondence, televised, videotaped, and other short courses taken for the purpose of maintaining, improving or expanding the skills and knowledge relevant to the PEs practice
    • presenting or attending seminars, in-house courses, workshops, or professional or technical
    • presentations made at meeting, conventions, or conferences which are relevant to the PE's practice
    • teaching or instructing in an area relevant to the PE's practice
    • authoring published papers, articles, or books in any area relevant to the PE's practice
    • active participation in professional or technical societies (some States allow 2 PDH for this, but will vary with states)

Information is available on how your Section or Division can sponsor an ISA seminar.
