Registration opens for ISA’s 61st Analysis Division Symposium, 24-28 April 2016

Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, USA (01 March 2016) — The International Society of Automation (ISA) today announces the opening of registration for its 2016 Analysis Division Symposium, which will explore the latest advances in analytical processes, techniques and applications, 24-28 April 2016 in Galveston, Texas, USA.

In addition to the extensive, three-day technical program—which incorporates the critical insights of leading experts and the presentation of more than 30 peer-reviewed technical papers—the event, now in its 61st year, features:

  • Training on process analytic fundamentals as well as on advanced subjects
  • Nine vendor-led training sessions
  • An exhibit including 60 industry vendors
  • The ISA Analysis Division banquet
  • A variety of social activities

Get up to date on emerging trends and solutions

Expert speakers will address emerging trends and developments, and review best practices and success stories. Key topics and innovations in sampling, chromatography, spectroscopy, chemiluminescence and other analytical techniques and instrumentation will be discussed and explored in detail.

All papers to be presented will have been reviewed by a panel of widely recognized thought leaders in the analytical sciences. Papers will be formatted and published in the symposium proceedings, which are provided to all attendees as part of the registration. The non-commercial requirements for the papers ensure presentations of high integrity and quality.

Take advantage of excellent training opportunities—fundamentals to advanced

On Sunday, 24 April, the day before the technical program commences, a course on process analytic fundamentals will be conducted, providing attendees with excellent, foundational knowledge across a wide range of areas, including: gas chromatography, spectroscopy, discrete gas analysis, system design, sample conditioning systems, communications networking and more.

On the same day, two advanced courses also will be offered:

Increasing Sample System Reliability by Better Design
This fast-moving course explains many of the engineering procedures needed to design a gas or liquid sampling system for a process. Topics to be covered include:

  • Sources of time delay
  • Calculating transport lag for liquid and gas samples
  • Evaluating a process tap location
  • The advantages of using a sampling probe—or not
  • Probe resonance calculations
  • Ideal fluid velocity in sample lines
  • Velocity and flow rate in complex sample lines
  • Turbulence and pressure loss in complex sample lines
  • Determining friction factors
  • Optimizing sample line sizes
  • Why partial pressure causes condensation
  • Calculating the amount of condensation
  • Understanding the wet and dry basis of analysis
  • Determining the temperature of heated lines or cabinets
  • Solving the two big vaporizer problems
  • Why a phase diagram is a useful tool
  • The very strange consequence of allowing any condensation at all

Use of Statistical Control Charts to Determine Process Analyzer "Fit-for-Use"
This workshop, focusing on the use of statistical control charts in determining the "fit-for-use" of results from process analyzers, is ideal for process analyzer technicians with no prior knowledge or exposure to control charting. After an introductory overview of measurement variation, the instructor will present the basic statistical theory behind control charts and the associated work process—and then move to a simple hands-on exercise on the setup of a control chart using real-world data.

A simple Excel-based tool will be demonstrated and distributed to participants. Benefits associated with use of a control chart will be discussed, and attention will be placed on how to quantify normal deviation between labs versus process analyzer results. The workshop will conclude with an open-forum discussion on candidate process analyzer KPI's that can be established using control charts.

After the technical program concludes, on Thursday 28 April, representatives from leading vendors and suppliers will provide valuable hands-on training, specifically designed for technicians, on their newest products. Nine vendor training workshops will be conducted by:

Informative vendor exhibits

Representatives of process analyzer manufacturing and solution companies, and exhibits of new analytical products and applications will be available at the event’s Technology Forum and Exhibition. Attendees interact with leading vendors during morning and afternoon breaks, at lunch time, and after the technical presentations on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday evenings.
