ISA and Beamex to co-host web seminar on how to avoid the pitfalls of calibration system implementation
Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, USA (23 October 2014) – The International Society of Automation (ISA) and its Premier Strategic Partner for calibration, Beamex, will co-host a free web seminar on 13 November 2014 that will discuss the common pitfalls related to calibration system implementation and how to overcome them.
The web seminar, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Eastern Standard Time, will feature three calibration system implementation and project management experts: Jody Damron, Business Analyst at the Salt River Project (SRP); Pekka Videnoja, Professional Services Manager at Beamex; and Chuck Boyd, Account Director at Beamex.
“The seminar presents a a unique opportunity to hear valuable insights from leading experts on how to successfully transfer from one system to another and learn the key non-technical factors to consider," states Greg Sumners, President at Beamex, Inc.

Why focus on calibration system implementation?
Isn’t it enough to focus on comparing equipment and software feature and functions? The reason is that a calibration system implementation is only about 20 to 30% technology; the rest is work culture and process.
Calibration system implementation is also very time and resource consuming—the risk of failure is high. Typically, a calibration system implementation involves many different functions and departments within an organization, from IT to quality, and can consume a lot of resources and take even years to complete.
This web seminar will provide practical insights about the typical pitfalls in calibration system implementation, and pinpoint the tools and best practices to overcome them, as well as the key success factors in implementing a calibration system.
The seminar will also provide a first-hand account of how the SRP, one of the nation's largest public power utilities, successfully implemented and transitioned to an automated calibration system.
“Failure was not an option,” says the SRP’s Jody Damron, who will present the case study.
Damron explains that typical seminars relating to calibration focus mostly on technology issues alone. In addition, he says, “there are a lot of seminars and presentations on how to implement and make a transition between IT systems such as an ERP system, but you do not see seminars or webinars focusing on calibration system implementation or calibration process change. Yet the process change or implementation part is the area where companies typically struggle the most.”
More about the presenters
Together, the trio of presenters possess more than 70 years of expertise in IT system development and implementation as well as business process change management.
Damron possesses 36 years of experience in the electric utility industry. He is the Business Analyst lead for SRP Generation software systems, handling all installations, upgrades and maintenance. In this role, he helps to ensure continuity and efficiency for all SRP’s coal-, gas- and hydro-generating electric stations. SRP is one of the largest electrical utilities in the southwestern US.
Damron’s past experience includes roles served as control room operator; instrument technician; DCS technician; HVAC controls technician; and instrument, electrical, maintenance, planning/scheduling, and apprentice supervisor. He has served as the business lead for many critical projects including: instrument data and software calibration upgrades, work and asset management software upgrades, controls system upgrades, and many business process upgrades. He is a co-author of ISA-77.70.01 Tracking and Reporting of Instrument and Control Data, which is currently being updated to include new business processes. He currently serves an ISA Committee Chairman.
Videnoja has been involved in software development and implementation for more than 14 years. For the past five years, he has managed calibration system implementations. Before that, he managed and executed software development projects for nine years.
Videnoja holds a master of engineering degree (2006) in strategic leading of technology-based business from Centria University of Applied Sciences; and a bachelor of engineering degree (2001) in information technology from Oulu University of Applied Sciences. Today, he manages the Beamex Professional Services team and provides technical support to Beamex customers and the Beamex global sales team.
Boyd has extensive software development, system implementation and business development experience spanning the past 29 years. He has served in various business development and client advocacy positions during the past 15 years, spending the last five years with Beamex managing key global and strategic accounts as well as market development responsibilities in various regions of the U.S.
He previously served 10 years as a business system analyst working on software development projects. In this role, he functioned as a communication conduit between the business sphere and the IT environment, working with key executives and users to translate business vision into process and data models, identifying business rules and testing requirements. Boyd earned a bachelor of science degree in computer information systems from DeVry Institute of Technology.
